Six Word Memoir #4

For this six word memoir I selected the words “some friends happen for a reason”. I did so because friends are very important to me, and I think that a lot of them do happen for a reason. The picture is of one of my best friends and me in the airport, on our way to a big swim competition. My team is like a big family, and I’m good friends with everyone. I am happiest when I’m with my swimming friends.

Six Word Memoir #3

I chose “Follow the leader to the end” for my third six word memoir. I chose those words because I would do anything for my friends. The picture is of me and two of my best friends. I don’t have a cottage, but my family goes to our friend’s cottage in Gimli almost every weekend over the summer. My fondest summer memories take place in Gimli, and I miss it already. I can’t wait until next summer!

Six Word Memoir #2

For this six word memoir, I chose the words “The Beach Is My Second Home”. I chose them because I love the beach (especially the ocean) and I feel at home there. The picture is of my swim team and me in the ocean in Hawaii. I went there for a training camp 2 years ago, and am returning this spring break for another training camp. Every day we would go to a different beach and play in the waves. I matched the picture and the words together because that training camp was very fun, and a lot of the good memories of it are memories of the beach.

Six Word Memoir #1

The reason I chose the six words “I especially appreciate the little things” is because it’s true. The littlest things in life make me the happiest, and I always notice the small things that make people, experiences and life in general great. The picture is of me and one of my two cousins, Winston, blowing bubbles at the lake in Ontario on a warm summer’s day. I matched the picture with my six word memoir because my cousin is small, and he brings me so much joy.  Also, I remember that day very clearly, and the reason is because so many good little things happened.

Reading Response #3
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Stephen Chbosky
Pages 46-90

This book is just getting better as it goes on. Many great things happened in pages 46-90. It wasn't as exciting as previous pages I've read, but still full of meaningful lessons and events. It's kind of weird how much Charlie and I have in common, I'm constantly finding details in his life that I can relate to. Some of them may not be very meaningful or deep, such as: we both have magnetic poetry, or that we are both taking our driving tests soon; but there are more serious things as well. In the section that I read on Friday, it is the holiday season. One of the main events that takes place is a game of secret Santa that Charlie participates in with his friends. Charlie is his best friend's secret Santa, and the first gift that he gives him is a mixed tape he makes himself. When he is finished,  he says that he had an amazing feeling because in the palm of his hand there was this small thing that had so many memories and feelings and great joy and sadness, and that it was amazing. I love music and making mixes, and I know exactly how he felt.

My favourite character in The Perks of Being a Wallflower is definitely Charlie. He is very smart, looks at everything from a very interesting point of view, and tells really great stories. My least favourite character is Probably Charlie's sister, because she's impatient and a bit mean. I don't know a lot about her yet though.

I like this book more and more every single time I read it. It is so full of feeling, and I just can't get enough.

Reading Response #2
The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Stephen Chbosky
Pages 16-46

The perks of Being a Wallflower is the best book I've read in a long time. It is written in letter format, and this has some benefits and drawbacks (but mostly benefits). When I began reading this book, I was a bit afraid of  it being written in the form of a series of letters; I thought it would disrupt the flow of the story. It's completely the opposite. A few days or more are skipped between in each letter, and in every letter something new and exciting happens in Charlie's life. The story is easy to follow, and sometimes I even forget
that I am reading separate letters, and not just one continual story.

In the section of the book that I read on Friday, The meaning behind the title of the book was revealed. In the middle of a very important event in Charlie's life, a friend says that Charlie is a "wallflower". According to Charlie's friend, it means that he "see's things, keeps quiet about them, and understands". That is EXACTLY who Charlie's character is.

Charlie is constantly learning new things about life, and just as his friend said, "keeps quiet about them and understands".I feel close to Charlie in a way. I think i'm a bit of a wallflower myself. I feel like I can understand him. I'm very glad that I read this book!

I have a feeling that something bad is about to happen in the story. everything is just so perfect right now in Charlie's life. He has great friends, and life is really good, but I'm scared that it won't last. I found an interesting text to text connection, and it was within the book! Charlie is given the book Peter Pan to read. He says that he enjoyed it very much, but that it was unlike reading other books, for he didn't think about it while reading it, because it was fantasy. I think that the true reason for him not thinking about it, and kind of dismissing it as impossible was because it is the story of his own life. He is both Wendy and Peter Pan. The "Wendy" part of him is growing up, and the "Peter" part of him is not understanding why.

I can't wait to see what happens next!

Introduction

My name is Ben Shewchuk, and this is my creative writing blog. I hope this blog will help me increase my writing skill throughout the semester. I love reading and writing, which is the reason I am taking this grade twelve course in grade ten! I want writing to be a part of my life for years to come. I write when I can, but am a competitive swimmer who trains ten times a week, so having time is a bit of a challenge. Enjoy my blog.
